Building Strong Reading & Writing Foundations

Our journey begins with the fundamentals of reading: the short vowel sounds!

‣ a – apple, ant

‣ e – elephant, egg

‣ i – igloo, ink

‣ o – orange, octopus

‣ u – umbrella, upside-down

Once children master these individual vowel sounds, we introduce key consonant phonemes. Through fun, interactive activities and syllable games, students learn to blend these sounds together to form full words—sparking a genuine love for reading and language exploration.

Alongside phonics, we build essential handwriting habits. Children learn proper desk posture and pencil grip, as well as correct letter formation from start to finish.

Phonics 2

Building Reading Confidence & Comprehension

Designed for children who already know their alphabet letters and short sounds, this class takes early reading skills to the next level!

What We Cover:

‣ Advanced Blending: We move from simple words into more complex blends, including CCVC (e.g., frog) and CVCC (e.g., milk) patterns.

‣ Tricky & Sight Words: Children learn high-frequency “camera” words to bridge the gap between sounding out individual words and reading full sentences.

‣ Phonics Concepts: We introduce special rules like Magic e and “Mr. Y” to unlock a vast new world of vocabulary and decoding strategies.

‣ Reading Comprehension: Beyond just decoding words or guessing from pictures, we guide children to truly understand and connect with what they read.

‣ Handwriting & Sentence Structure: We continue practicing proper seating posture, correct letter formation, and appropriate spacing between words in short sentences.

‣ Spelling & Vocabulary: To reinforce classroom learning, children will receive weekly spelling lists to practice at home, followed by a friendly test at the start of each lesson. This daily practice helps students apply their phonetic knowledge, build writing confidence, and strengthen the connection between reading and spelling.

Home–School Connection: To foster a lifelong love of reading, children will take home leveled books from our library for daily practice.

Phonics 3

Digraph Analysis: Focuses on multi-letter graphemes and vowel digraphs (e.g., long /a/ variants: ai, ay, a-e, eigh) to deepen phonetic decoding and word-structure comprehension.

Grammar, Punctuation & Writing: We transition from short phrases to structured creative writing. Children learn punctuation and sentence mechanics, paving the way toward writing their own short stories.

Weekly Expectations & Home Learning:

‣ Spelling & Vocabulary: Students practice High-Frequency and Year 1/2 spelling lists daily at home, with a friendly spelling test held each week.

‣ Daily Reading: 20 minutes of daily reading at home using teacher-assigned books tailored to your child’s reading level.

‣ Structured Homework: Weekly homework assignments help build strong, consistent study habits early on, setting students up for long-term academic success.

English 

Advanced Literacy, Literary Analysis & Writing

As students advance in English, the focus shifts toward critical analysis and sophisticated expression. In this program, students will learn to identify and apply key literary techniques, expand their academic vocabulary, and elevate their writing style.

Key Focus Areas:

‣ Comprehension: Students deepen their reading comprehension by mastering inference, writing detailed book reports.

‣ Text Analysis & Techniques: Children learn how authors craft stories, exploring why choices are made and how to apply those techniques to their own writing.

‣ Ability-Based Grouping: To ensure optimal challenge and support, students are grouped according to their skill level.

‣ Reading Requirement: Continuous reading is central to progress. Students are expected to read at least one book per week, utilizing our extensive library for borrowing.

Mandarin
